The C.E. (Chuck) Savedge Scholarship is awarded to a student who is involved with his or her yearbook staff.  This student must also attend USC School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

This year’s recipient, Kaelyn Urena of Sun Valley HS, has served as editor-in-chief of her yearbook staff for the past two years. She will graduate in the top 7% of her class. Aside from yearbook, Urena is also involved in the National Honor Society, her school’s soccer team and Student Council, of which she is vice president.

During her time as a staff member and editor of her school’s yearbook, she has been involved in every aspect of producing the publication, including writing, editing, theme development, design, and management of staff and budgets.

Urena says, “These skills have helped me to enhance my leadership ability and serve as a solid foundation for internship and career opportunities in the field of mass communications”.

Urena hopes to continue to be involved with journalism and community service next year when she attends the University of South Carolina to study mass communications.  She is passionate about the fashion and music industries and plans to pursue internship opportunities all over the country during her undergraduate years.

Urena says “It’s my goal to engage and embrace every moment in and out of college that contributes to becoming a well-rounded individual both personally and professionally”.
