The Elizabeth B. Dickey Scholarship, named in honor of SIPA’s executive director for 33 years, Beth Dickey, is awarded by the University of South Carolina’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications to an outstanding SIPA student at the convention. Recipients must attend the USC School of Journalism and Mass Communications and plan a career in journalism.

This year’s recipient, Nina Davis of Richland Northeast HS, has been on her school’s yearbook staff since 2011, serving as editor-in-chief this past year. She is involved with other journalism organizations including Quill and Scroll and the Convergence Media Magnet program.  Davis is also a member of the National Honor Society and a volunteer for YoungLife, the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and the Salvation Army.

Though she says her first year on yearbook staff was “uninspiring” and “difficult”, Davis spent the following years developing her writing and design skills, and eventually took the position as the publication’s editor-in-chief.

Davis says, “Being editor-in-chief has, I believe, pushed me to pursue a truly well rounded education by incorporating these skills into every aspect of my education.”

Her favorite aspect of journalism and mass communications is graphic design, a field she hopes to study at the University of South Carolina and eventually pursue as a career.

Davis says, “I am passionate about graphic design, but more importantly, I am passionate about seeking an education that will expand who I am and will prompt me to learn, create and give.”
