Collyn Taylor with SchoPress director, Karen Flowers

This scholarship is the only one presented to a current student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.  (All the others are for incoming freshmen.)  The person largely responsible for the endowing of this scholarship, Sylvia Daughtry, has been a longtime member of the SIPA executive board, and because Sylvia knows how important scholastic journalism is, she allows the award to be presented at the SIPA banquet annually.

Karen Flowers and Leslie Dennis didn’t have to look far for a new office assistant when Kelsey D’Amico graduated last May. They knew immediately they wanted to hire Collyn Taylor, now a freshman at the University of South Carolina, because he had been on their radar for years.  Everyone in the office knew Taylor and were excited when the fall semester began.

The scholastic press staff knew Taylor would be able to help with
the new schopress online website as well as all the other details of office work: interviewing, writing articles, running copies, organizing material, entering data in the membership database. And Flowers was excited to have another assistant who would
be able to help her with her smart phone and google docs.

“Collyn has brought a quiet presence, a quiet sense of humor and a quiet dedication to all the office responsibilities,” said Flowers.  “We are so excited to have him as a freshman on our already exemplary office staff.”
