Carolina Journalism Institute

The Carolina Journalism Institute is a five-day summer institute devoted to helping middle and high school students enhance their knowledge of cutting-edge multimedia journalism techniques and standards for their publications and productions.

In this residential camp, you’ll stay in USC’s newest dorm, Campus Village, and take classes at the state-of-the-art School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Meals and social activities with other campers are included.

2025 Camp Dates:

  • June 8-13 for rising 6-9 grade students
  • June 15-20 for rising 9-12 grade students

Pricing:

Residential – $1150
Residential scholars check in Sunday afternoon and check out Friday at 2 p.m. The program fee includes all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and all afternoon and evening activities. Scholars reside in a university residence hall and experience student life at USC alongside counselors.

Commuter $665
Commuting scholars check in Sunday afternoon for a mandatory orientation. Daily check-in is Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. Daily check-out is Monday through Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Friday check-out is 2 p.m. The program fee includes lunch and all afternoon activities. Commuters are also invited to participate in the all scholars evening dinner and activities on the designated day during the week.

Commuter Plus Evening $750
Commuter Plus scholars check in Sunday afternoon for a mandatory orientation. Daily check-in is Monday through Friday at 8 a.m. Daily check-out is Monday through Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Friday check-out is 2 p.m. The program fee includes lunch and dinner and all afternoon and evening activities.

*A $200 non-refundable deposit is required and must be submitted along with the application. Checks or credit cards are accepted, and details will be included with the application materials. The balance is due upon acceptance into CJI. This deposit is deducted from the total course program fee.

 

Schedule:

Educational sessions run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. with a lunch break. After class, scholars have the chance to interact with each other in a variety of fun-filled afternoon activities.

Evenings at USC are filled with fun activities like movie, trivia and bowling nights! Friends and family are invited to final presentations Friday afternoon.

9 – 11:30 a.m. Instructional module (All)
11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Lunch (All)
1 – 3:15 p.m. Instructional module (All)
3:15 – 4:30 p.m. Recreational afternoon activities – Sports, trivia, campus bookstore visit, etc.
4:30 – 5 p.m. Pick-up (Commuters)
5:30 p.m. Dinner (Residential and Commuter Plus)
7 p.m. Evening activities – bowling, movie night, board games, Jeopardy, putt-putt, etc. (Residential and Commuter Plus)
8 – 9 p.m. Pick-up (Commuter + Evening) depending on activity
10:00 p.m. Room check (Residential)
10:30 p.m. Lights out (Residential)

All applications for new or returning students must include personal and academic information, an official transcript or most recent report card, test scores (if applicable), a non-refundable $200 deposit per course and choice of course(s).
