Beth Swann, adviser for the newsprint, online and literary magazine programs at Nation Ford High School, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Elizabeth B. Dickey Distinguished Service Award, one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. Known for her tireless advocacy, generous mentorship, and unwavering commitment to student journalism, Swann’s contributions have left a lasting impact on both her own school and the broader SIPA community.
Since stepping into her role at Nation Ford, Swann has passionately championed the importance of student voice. Whether she’s leading a classroom discussion, organizing workshops, or working behind the scenes, she reminds students and advisers alike that their words have power—and that power should be nurtured and protected.
Swann is especially known for her work in elevating literary magazines within the journalism education landscape. In a world where these publications are often overlooked, Swann not only champions their importance but also ensures they have a seat at the table. She volunteers frequently to lead sessions at SIPA and other journalism education events, always ready to share her knowledge and experience.
Her generosity goes beyond the classroom. When Richland Northeast High School adviser Leslie Dennis took over a literary arts magazine and needed guidance, Swann responded by sending “mounds” of curriculum, assignments, and materials—enough to fill a semester and then some. Dennis recalls being overwhelmed by Swann’s thoughtfulness and thankful for her willingness to help: “I have yet to sift through all of the information and am so grateful I can lean on her experience.”
Swann’s influence reaches far beyond her own school. She has shown up early to conventions to teach pre-conference writing workshops, coordinated transportation logistics, and even volunteered her students to help with event planning. Her dedication has helped sustain SIPA through times of transition and growth.
Larry Steinmetz, SIPA Executive Committee member and adviser at Bullitt East High School, emphasized her importance: “Beth Swann has been an integral part of the SIPA board. She has especially been vital in our transition in directors during a difficult period. She has been a crucial advocate for literary magazines when they often get neglected. On a personal note, Beth has been a steadfast friend and ear of support. Her dependability is why SIPA remains a special organization.”
The Elizabeth B. Dickey Distinguished Service Award honors individuals who exemplify outstanding service and dedication to SIPA and scholastic journalism. In every way, Beth Swann reflects the legacy of this award’s namesake through her compassion, leadership, and fierce belief in the value of student storytelling.
Her colleagues, students, and the entire SIPA community celebrate her well-deserved recognition and the many lives she’s touched along the way.
