Abigail Sanders wears a lot of hats–social media manager for WTHS News, dedicated runner for her school’s cross country and track teams and member-at-large for SIPA. Her passion for journalism began after watching WTHS broadcasts at school and being recruited by her adviser, sparking what’s become an exciting and rewarding journey for Sanders.
What is your position on staff?
For WTHS (my school’s broadcast program) I am the social media manager, but for SIPA I am a Member-at-Large!
What are your passions outside of journalism?
Outside of journalism, I love to run! I run for my school’s cross country/track team, and I have loved every second of it!
What’s your favorite story you’ve worked on and why?
My favorite show that I worked on was a co-production with Saint Joseph Catholic School in Jackson (BNN). One of BNN’s anchors and I helped bring a show to life that was all about the new term of Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves. I loved working on this show because it taught me how to work with other people, in broadcast, outside of my classroom. It was also a great experience to travel all the way to Jackson for Reeve’s inauguration!
What advice would you give to students looking to get involved in student journalism?
My advice to people looking to get into journalism would be to find a story that’s hidden. Everyone has a story; we journalists just must be daring enough to find it.
If you had to describe SIPA in three words, what would they be?
Exciting, rewarding and educational!
