Jolen McKenzie plays a key role at WTHS as a lead editor, while also serving his school through student council and staying active in his church community. He got his start in journalism after discovering a love for photography in middle school, which grew into a passion once he joined the program at Tupelo High School. Whether he’s fine-tuning a broadcast or helping organize events, Jolen brings steady leadership and a commitment to giving back.
What is your position on staff?
[For WTHS] my role is mainly editing and proofing the show. For SIPA I am a Member-at-Large!
What are your passions outside of journalism?
I really like helping with my community such as my school and church and giving back. I’m also in the student council so I help a lot around school.
What’s your favorite story you’ve worked on and why?
It was WTHS, March 21st, 2025. The anchor, Abby Sanders talked about our bad weather, and we used our on-site video from the SIPA competition, which I assisted in editing.
What advice would you give to students looking to get involved in student journalism?
You will gain hands-on experience, attend workshops to improve your skills, and consider starting a vlog if there’s no formal program. Network with fellow students, stay informed by reading widely, seek feedback on your work, and always be curious and persistent in finding stories.
If you had to describe SIPA in three words, what would they be?
Engaging, competitive and fun-loving
