For Clarke Central High School senior Peter Atchley, journalism has never been just another extracurricular. As managing editor of Odyssey Media Group, Atchley has built a reputation for balancing deadlines, staff needs, and the unexpected challenges that come with running a student newsroom — all while keeping the focus on people first.
That commitment to craft is what earned Atchley recognition as a SIPA Star. His adviser David Ragsdale, who nominated him, said he is confident that Atchley will make contributions to journalism for years to come.
“In every aspect of his work, Peter exemplifies the qualities of a SIPA Star,” Ragsdale said. “His curiosity, commitment and drive are matched only by his ability to bring out the best in those around him.”
As managing editor, Atchley’s role extends far beyond editing stories. He oversees peer evaluations, manages Odyssey Media Group storage space, and even handles HR concerns that arise within the staff.
“The day to day is generally a lot of it is going to different tables, helping where I can, checking in with people, managing them,” said Atchley.
For Atchley, though, it’s not about the tasks themselves but about the people behind them.
“[There is] something about the writing and the community,” said Atchley. “I recognized how rare this program is, and I was like, ‘I think this will be good for me.’”
The balance of tasks isn’t limited to the newsroom, though. Like many seniors, Atchley juggles a packed schedule of classes and involvement in other extracurriculars such as Ecology Club and National Honor Society. Even with the weight of those responsibilities, Atchley said Odyssey remains a top priority. He has been a member of staff since freshman year, working his way up to this position with several accolades under his belt.
Outside of journalism, Atchley’s passions point toward science and service. Inspired by his father, an ER doctor, Atchley plans to pursue a biology major in college and hopes to enter pediatric nursing or medicine. The same dedication to helping others that drives his work in the newsroom is reflected in his career aspirations.
SIPA Stars is a showcase series that spotlights individual students, celebrates their content and exemplifies good Southern journalism at work in scholastic classrooms.
An adviser or editor can recommend a student to be a SIPA Star through a short application process. We will create web and social media posts and letters to principals and local media outlets to identify and spotlight the student selected.
