More than 300 student journalists and advisers from 14 schools across South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Kentucky came together March 7-9 for the annual Southern Interscholastic Press Association Convention.
The weekend kicked off with hands-on pre-convention workshops at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, where students explored topics like podcasting, photography, layout and design, leadership and multimedia journalism. These sessions gave attendees the chance to sharpen their skills and explore new creative approaches.
The energy only grew as Aaron Manfull, director of student media at Francis Howell North High School in Missouri, took the stage for the keynote address. His insights into the evolving world of student journalism encouraged attendees to embrace innovation and find their unique voices in the media.
Throughout the conference, students had the chance to attend 40 different breakout sessions, covering everything from storytelling techniques to the latest trends in digital media. Whether they were looking to improve their reporting, refine their photography, or expand their multimedia skills, there was something for everyone.
For those eager to put their skills to the test, the on-site competitions provided a thrilling challenge. A total of 145 students competed in categories ranging from writing and photography to multimedia projects, showcasing their talents in a fast-paced, real-world setting.
Beyond the learning and competition, the conference was a celebration of community and collaboration. Attendees left not only with new skills and ideas but also with lasting connections and fresh inspiration to take back to their school publications.
Mark your calendars for next year’s SIPA Convention, happening March 6-8, 2026, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. We can’t wait to welcome another group of passionate student journalists ready to learn, connect, and celebrate the power of student media!
