TOP (Team on-site production) competitions took place during a three-hour period on Saturday, March 7, at the 2020 convention. All teams had to produce their packages during the three-hour time period based on a prompt given to them Friday night and from materials gathered at the SIPA convention. Click on the links to view the full packages each team produced.

Broadcast

Broadcast teams were asked to create a feature package based on the following prompt:

“One aspect of this year’s convention theme, “Make Them Listen,” focuses on making sure all issues and stories are heard and told. Using the theme as your inspiration, talk to those at the convention, at the hotel or at the Soda City Market on Main Street on Saturday morning and find out what issue or cause is important to them in this election year. The package can focus on the individual or a group of individuals – just make sure it has a focus. Whether they are worried about climate change or work as an activist, find a story that is uniquely 2020 and tell it. Ask the right questions, get relevant outside information and get a secondary
source or two.”

Literary Magazine

Literary magazine teams were asked to write, edit, create and draw inspiration to craft artistic interpretations and content for a magazine spread from the following prompt:

“This year’s convention theme, “Make Them Listen,” focuses on amplifying voices that are underrepresented and often go unheard. Using the theme as your inspiration, talk to your fellow convention attendees or artisans at the Soda City Market on Main Street Saturday morning and draw inspiration from these conversations for your content. Your spread should include both written (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, monologue) and visual (art, photography, mixed media) elements.”
